Wrong Reasons For Fasting: Don’t Fast For These Reasons

Wrong reasons for fasting

There are wrong reasons for fasting. And many believers are oblivious of these reasons. More so, God examines the motives behind every work, not the work itself.

Many believers have seen fasting and prayer as an instrument that will force God to give them their heart desires.

People fast for several reasons. Some fast because they feel they must fast at least once in a week(religion).

Some fast to display their level of spiritual capability and endowment to other believers who hardly fast.

And some believers fast in order to receive answers to their prayers by force.

However, by the help of the Holy Spirit, I have come up with five wrong reasons for fasting. Take your seat and calmly read and digest this article.

Tips On How To Pray Effectively As A Christian

Honestly, I have heard of a believer who was observed a 40-day fast with the only aim of killing the devil.

He said he believed by the end of his fasting and prayer the devil would died. Till now the devil has not died.

Today, I believe there are some people who believe that the fervency of their fasting and prayer will kill the devil.

Truly, many have believed this sugarcoated lie due to the poor understanding they possess as regards the Word of God.

Even Jesus did not kill the devil, He only disarmed his powers and authorities (Col 2:15).

My friend, who are you to kill the devil? The angels did not kill him, they drove him to this earth (Rev 12:10).

Don’t be deceived

So, who has deceived you that your fasting and prayer will kill the devil? Do not misunderstand me. The devil is powerless over believers.

Also, he has no power over us but God did not say it anywhere in His Word that we shall kill the devil.

To fast to kill the devil is to deceive yourself. No amount of prayer can kill him. That’s also a wrong reasons for fasting.

Basically, God has put him on this earth to strike the children of the disobedient (unbelievers), with his rod.

Wrong Reason For Fasting

Candidly, some ministers of the gospel have misquoted and misinterpreted Luke 24:49 which says

“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but TARRY YE in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

Jesus said to them, ” tarry ye” not “fast ye.” To tarry means to wait, linger, to stay somewhere temporarily, to delay and to stay for a while.

All these meanings does not mean fasting. You can receive His spirit when you fast and you can receive His spirit when you do not fast.

But my point is, do not center your fast around the infilling of Holy Ghost. It is optional to fast to receive the Holy Ghost.

Biblically, God never told you to fast before you can receive His spirit.

See, even when the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, they did not fast. They only stayed where they were commanded to stay.

Just go to the Lord with an expectation to receive the Holy Spirit. If you don’t pant after Him, you may not receive him. Just pray!

Just Pray

Fasting is not the major criterion you need to receive the Spirit of God.

You don’t necessarily need to fast to receive the Spirit of God. Only spend quality time with the Lord in His presence.

In the Bible, the people in Cornelius house received the Spirit of God without fasting and prayer.

Yet, they only heard the Word and they began to speak in tongues (Acts 10:44-46).

Another Wrong Reasons For Fasting

You may fast for 120 days if you don’t obey the laws that govern wealth you will be frustrated.

Money does not answer to prayer and fasting. It only answers to our obedience and compliance to the principles that produce wealth (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

Indeed, He gives power to get wealth. If money answers to prayer and fasting. Moses was supposed to be the richest man to have ever lived on this earth because he fasted so much.

Praying and fasting for financial blessing is unscriptural. Be diligent in your work, pray, give and be honest. That’s it.

Important: How To Fast As A Christian

Many love to go on a very long fast so that they can boast of their fasting grace.

Additionally, they will use it to threaten their friends that hardly fast.

Sadly, some of these people are men of God. They will use every opportunity to make people know that they fast a lot.

In other words, some of them will look horrible in order to let people know that they are fasting. This is another wrong reason for fasting.

We should fast for the right reason and whenever we fast let’s look good.

Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. - Matthew 6:16-18.

No man can change the integrity of God. He is the same before you fast, when you fast and after you fast.

Malachi 3:6 says “I am the Lord, I changeth not.”
Nothing can change Him. You can’t change God’s heart by fasting because He is unchangeable. You can’t change His intention towards you because you have fasted.

Maybe God has called you into ministry and you said you didn’t want to be involved in the work of ministry. And, you resorted into fasting, thinking that God will use your fast to change His plan for you. It’s a lie!

His gifts and callings are irrevocable. He will not change His plan.

Above all, God will not bring people to heaven based on the number of fast they have observed.

God is not going to send anyone to hell because he didn’t fast enough. He’s going to send them to hell because they did not do His will (Matthew 7:21).

Let us fast but let’s fast with the right understanding.
