Four Ways To Know If You Have A Good Conscience
The Word of God enjoins us to possess a good conscience (1Peter 3:16). Maintaining a good conscience requires determination and patience.
In this present world where evil has become the order of the day. We all need to eschew evil and be the followers of that which is good.
However, it is when you have a good conscience that you will be able to do good things. Evil is embedded in dead conscience. Your conscience need to stay active for you to eschew evil.
Now, let’s examine the four basic proofs of good conscience.
Four Ways To Know If You Have A Good Conscience
And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
Paul was writing about the fact that he didn’t allow any offence to get into his conscience. New International Version renders it as thus;
“So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.”
Before you can keep your conscience clear before man and God. That means, you have done what you ought to have done.
Definitely, it will keep giving you a nudge to do the right thing all the time. But your conscience will never be clear and pure, if you don’t obey its voice.
Therefore, the proof of a good conscience is the ability to stay honest at all times. Lies will ruin your mind. Apart from the fact that lying is sinful. Lying will tarnish the responsiveness of your God-ordained policeman.
Listen, you don’t have a good moral sense if you don’t see anything wrong in sin. If you have relegated honesty to the back and dishonesty has taken the fore-front in your life. Beware! Something is wrong with your moral sense.
A good conscience is the one that works against every form of dishonesty. Even if you lie to someone mistakenly, you will be pricked in your heart.
When you are not more convicted when you sin, something is wrong with your conscience. The proof of a good moral sense is honesty at all times.

• Good Report From People
1 Samuel 12:2-4Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.
And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.
Prophet Samuel blatantly told the people to prove him wrong if he had defrauded them before.
And they said he did not defraud them. This is a proof of a good moral sense. The report or what people say about you matters a lot.
Never join others by assuming that what others say about you does not matter. Dear friend, it matters a lot.
The reason why some have been denied of major opportunities in life is because of the bad report people give concerning them.
What People Say Matters A Lot
Frankly, you don’t assume that you have a good conscience until you have proven it in the sight of men. Until people can vouch for you and say that; “You are a good person.” Never conclude that you have a good moral sense.
Your moral sense is proven and known through people’s words. If you have people that you have defrauded or cheated. If you have people you have exploited several times. All these are enough to prove the state of your moral sense.
Summarily, good report from people concerning your personality shows that you have a good conscience.
• Fear Of God
Genesis 39:9-11And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
What is the fear of God? It is the ability to ignore evil and embrace that which is good.
In that passage, Joseph chose not to sin against God by not having sex with Potiphar’s wife. The state of your moral sense is proven through your ability to shun evil.
See, if you embrace evil without premonition, you have a weak moral sense.
Once again, the proof of good conscience is the fear of God. No man can claim to have a good conscience without right living.
Righteousness through the fear of God is the custodian of great enduring things in life.
• Obedience To Your Conscience
1 Sam 24:5-7
NIV:Afterward, David was CONSCIENCE-STICKEN for having cut off a corner of his robe.
NIV:He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.”
NIV:With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
David had just finished cutting a corner of Saul’s robe when he was conscience-stricken. What he did afterwards was amazing!
David realized his mistake. He knew it was wrong for him to do that to God’s anointed.
So, he rebuked his men and didn’t allow them to attack Saul. We must also learn to obey our conscience. If you’re the type who doesn’t obey it, you’re doing yourself a great deal of harm.
Again, your good conscience is proven through your ability to obey it.
