Five Things Your Friends Will Do To Your Life

The friends you keep will determine to a large extent what you will become in life. An adage says, ”Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are.” The kind of friends you keep will have great influence on your life and destiny.

Here are the basic effects your friends will have on your life;

(1) Your Friends Can Mar Or Make You

Isaiah 41:8 (KJV)

But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham MY FRIEND.

Abraham walked with God until he became His friend. It was his friend who made him prosperous and successful (Gen 24:1). This means that the friend you have can mar or make your life. God being a friend of Abraham, made his life remarkable on the surface of the earth.

Amnon had a bad friend called Jonadab who gave him a wrong advice that ruined his life (2 Sam 13:3). Amnon, the son of David who have succeeded David if he had not died abruptly. The friend Amnon kept marred his life.

There are people who have kept bad friends that have destroyed their lives, careers and marriages. This is as a result of our inability to avoid unproductive company. Bad company corrupt good manners. Beware of the kind of friends you confide in.

(2) Your Friends Can Lead You Astray

Proverbs 12:26 (NIV)

The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

A man who keeps a wicked man as his friend will surely be led astray. Jonadab was a shrewd man, so he unequivocally led his friend, Amnon astray. There are some people who have been led astray by their evil friends.

You need to be careful. I have seen friends who advised their friends to divorce their wives over irrelevant issues. I believe a true believer should not have unbelievers as friends because their spirits differ. Your friends should be a set of people who believe in the teachings of Christ, so as to live by them.

(3) Friendship Determines Your Level Of Wisdom

Proverbs 13:20 (NIV)

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm

The only criterion given here for one to become wise is friendship. Ability to walk with wise men guarantees wisdom. We do not need to sit down and converse with them all the time.

But we can buy their books and read them. We can listen to their tapes or watch their videos. By all these, we will be able to receive wisdom. Make sure you are walking with those who are more knowledgeable than you in order to increase in wisdom.

Daniel 2:17

Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah

Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah

Daniel had wise men as his friends. Shedrack, Meshack and Abednego were all described as wise men and they were friends to Daniel. No wonder Daniel was also wise.

(4) They Can Make You Live A Disciplined Life

Daniel 1:6-8 (KJV)

Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

The decision Daniel took not to defile himself with food and wine made his three other friends to join him. They had to be fed with vegetables as requested by Daniel and they endured that period.

In other words, if you have friends that maintains high level of discipline. You are bound to follow them. If all your friends are drunkards, womanizers and smokers, they will pass their anointing over to you. Beware!

(5) Good Friends Can Elevate You

Daniel 2:48-49

48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.

After Daniel was elevated, he requested that his friends should be promoted as well. And they were promoted. Shedrack, Meshack and Abednego would have been left in that position if they did not have a good friend.

Nevertheless, keep good friends. Friendship should offer promotion. Any friendship that is void of progress and promotion is fake. If God has lifted you, carry your friends along. Do not be selfish. Be a good friend and promote your friends.
