Baptism

The Greek word for “baptism” is “βαπτιζω”. The English letters look like this: “baptidzo.”

Analytically, the Greek word “baptidzo” literally means to “dip” or to “immerse”.

Therefore, baptism can be defined as the act in which a Christian is immersed in water to symbolize the end of the old manner of living and a beginning of new life.

Wikipedia also defines baptism, HERE.

Also, baptism is also the visible testimony of our commitment to Christ. This is the beginning of discipleship.

Baptism was first mentioned in;

Matthew 3:11;
“[11]I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.”

In those days, John the Baptist baptized people for the remission of sins and for repentance.

And After the establishment of the new Covenant due to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, baptism became a Covenant to live as a disciple of Jesus.

We don’t baptise people in order for their sins to be cleansed.

Your sins are cleansed as you give your life to Christ but baptism is just the display of the acceptance of a new life in Christ Jesus.

WHO IS TO BE BAPTIZED?

Yes! The person who is expected to be baptized is someone who has given his/her life to Christ.

You don’t get immersed in water before you accept Christ. Rather, you accept Christ as your Lord and saviour before you get baptized.

Acts 2:38
[38]Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Peter expected them to repent first before they were baptized. That’s how baptism is to be done because whoever is not saved should not to be baptized.

Philip baptized the Ethiopian eunuch after he had received the gospel(Acts 8:35-39).

WHO IS TO BAPTIZE/IMMERSE BELIEVERS IN WATER?

Anybody that is saved and has been properly nurtured up in God’s Word can baptize a person who has just given his life to Jesus Christ.

If you preach to someone and he has accepted Christ, you can baptize the person if he or she is ready. You do not necessarily need to be a Prophet, Bishop, Pastor or an Evangelist.

Jesus said to believers concerning the great commission.

Matthew 28:19;

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Without mincing words, this verse applies to all believers not to pastors alone.

SIGNIFICANCE OF BAPTISM

• Acceptance of our transition from death to life

Colossians 2:12
[12]Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

When you get baptized you have just died and risen with Christ and you are now dead to your old self.

• Acceptance of new life

Romans 6:4
[4]Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death. That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism symbolises the acceptance of new way of life. If you have been smoking Cannabis, and committing sexual immorality before.

And you accepted Jesus Christ, forsook your sins and get baptized. Then, you have just accepted to live a new life contrary to the old sinful life.

Joining a new family

1 Corinthians 12:12
[12]For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13
[13]For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Truly, baptism signifies our readiness to join the body of Christ, a new family; the Church of Jesus Christ.

A pledge to follow Christ Jesus

1 Corinthians 12:13
[13]For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Believers have pledged to follow Christ once they get baptised. And we are now one in Christ as we get baptized.

• The acceptance of the trinity

Matthew 28:19
[19]Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Biblically, baptism signifies our readiness to accept the mysterious existence of the trinity. God the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. You accept the fact that Trinity exists in the Bible.

HOW ARE WE TO BE BAPTIZED?

As the definition of baptism implies, we are to be dipped under water. New coverts must be dipped and immersed under water as our author of faith initiated it in Matthew 3:16;

[16]And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.

Definitely, we are not to sprinkle water on new converts but we are to dip them under water as Jesus did because John the Baptist did not sprinkle water on him but he immersed him in water. Let’s follow this rule.

CATEGORY OF PEOPLE THAT SHOULD NOT BE BAPTIZED;

• Infants should not be baptized because there is no record of that in the Bible.

Someone who is old enough to know that he has made a decision is the one that can be baptized. Probably from 12 years old upward.

• Those who are not ready to leave a new life of true disciples of Jesus Christ should not be baptized.

• Additionally, those who are forced to come to the waters should not be baptized.

In the first place, people should not be forced for baptism. It’s a decision. They should be allowed to personally surrender themselves for baptism.

• Unbelievers should not be baptized at all because it is a practice that is unscriptural.

• Lastly, those who are considering whether to give their lives to Christ or not are not to be baptized.

We should wait for people to personally accept Christ before we baptize them.

  • Concerning Matthew 28:19. This was the commandment Jesus gave to his disciple while he was with them. As we knew that after ascension He was with them for forty days teaching them things concerning the kingdom of God. If we search through the book of acts where all the baptism was recorded. The disciple baptist in the name of Jesus. please let every christian check the fact. none was baptist in new testament in trinity names. God bless you all.
